Parents helping on the day:

Chris, was there the whole day and without her excellent organization skills and patience and willingness to drive back and forth to collect and top up the shortages, we wouldn’t have had such a successful outcome. Heng, Paul, Bernard, Rebecca, Olivia, Liz, Mariane, David, Su San, Maggie, Amy, and Melissa and our dedicated teachers: David teacher, Chow teacher, Jessica, Kirra, Wendy & Marisha. Without any of your help, this annually fund raising would not have been so successful. So three cheers for the excellent team work of our Kimmba families and teachers.

We took $1745.45 (with Amy’s donation of $20) for the day, and with all the cost of the sausages had been covered by parents donation, the profit was $1957.15.

A BIG THANK YOU TO YOU ALL.

Early Learning Conference Presentation

This is a link to the newest brain research about babies’ early learning capacity. Brain expert Dr. Patricia Kuhl, co-director of the Institute for Learning and Brain Sciences at the University of Washington, talks about the innate learning ability of infants and children. This is a valuable film to watch, especially if you have children younger than 7 years old.

Also have a look at Marisha’s brief comments about the presentation. She has noted that:

1. The critical period for language learning begins from after 7 months of age. After this age, the ability to distinguish between sounds starts to decline. You can already see a significant decline from 7 months to 12 months in the ability of babies to distinguish foreign language sounds where the babies are not exposed to those sounds.

2. The reason for this is that the baby starts to take stats of what they hear, and their neurons start to gear themselves to what they are hearing. This is basically the "use it or lose it" principle.

3. With just 12 sessions of 25 minutes each during this time period where babies are exposed to the foreign language, the language ability of that baby was found to be NO DIFFERENT compared with a baby who was in the foreign country!

4. Exposing babies to just foreign language videos or audio tapes MAKE NO DIFFERENCE (ie., they do not work!). The key is INTERACTION. The degree of interaction seems to determine how much the baby's brain decides to pay attention to (or take stats of) the foreign language that is being heard.
